The Auckland community is mourning the sudden death of Vinnie Jr., a teenager also known as Buka, who was fatally struck by a train near Baldwin Avenue railway station in Mount Albert.
Police were called to the road and pedestrian level crossing beside Baldwin Avenue station at about 3:28 p.m. on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, after reports that a pedestrian had been struck by a train. The teenage boy died at the scene.
Vinnie was later confirmed to be a student at Mount Albert Grammar School, where his death has left classmates, teachers and staff grieving. School headmaster Patrick Drumm informed caregivers that the school was actively supporting students and staff affected by the tragedy, with guidance and pastoral teams continuing to provide assistance.

The family also emphasized how difficult it has been to come to terms with losing Vinnie at such a young age. Their tribute portrayed him as a cherished member of a close family whose life had a lasting impact on those around him.
Mount Albert Grammar School Mourns Student
The tragedy has been particularly difficult for the Mount Albert Grammar School community. Several high school students were reportedly on the station platform around the time of the incident, and police appealed to anyone who witnessed what happened and had not yet spoken with investigators to come forward.
The school lowered its flag to half-mast as students and staff mourned the loss. Headmaster Patrick Drumm said the school was grateful for the support coming from the wider educational community and beyond.
The incident also caused disruption to Auckland’s Western Line, with train services cancelled following the fatal transport incident at Baldwin Avenue station.
